Backyard Mission

For the last eleven years First Presbyterian and First Christian Reformed Churches have undertaken a joint mission project in the city of Chatham. Over two days a group of volunteers transforms the outside of a house for an individual in need. We have scraped and painted houses, built wheelchair ramps and fences, repaired decks and front porches, replaced eavestroughs, landscaped, and done general cleanup around a house. This is done free of charge as an outreach of love and compassion to the homeowner.

Please note that we have chosen our site for this year's project which will run on Friday and Saturday, August 28-29, 2020.

We will be looking for nominations next January for the project  taking place in summer 2021.  To that end, we are looking for a homeowner whose home needs some external repair.
You must own your home, live on the premises, and have homeowner insurance. Unfortunately because of liability, we are not able to repair roofs and all work must be done outside the home.

If you have this kind of need because of disability or other circumstances or you know of someone that would benefit from this project, please reply in writing to:

Backyard Mission 2019:

Our Backyard Mission 2019 is a wrap, and was a big success.  Over 50 volunteers worked on two sites on Forest Street.   One house was scraped and painted, and the other had its entire wood walkways and ramps rebuilt.  Both houses had extensive landscape work done to the property. Rusty and Laura were this year's deserving homeowners chosen through our nomination process last January. We were honoured and delighted to serve and get to know Rusty and Laura, and wish them the best in their renovated homes. Our theme this year was "Love God; Love Others" based on Mark 12:30-31

Special thanks to Jay Jamieson, Dwight Byrd, and Judi Aitken for organizing this year's event.  Thanks also to Mark Labadie of Mark Labadie Construction who was our onsite contractor.  Mark has graciously given of his time, talent and tools to this project since its beginning.
